Hoot System Alarms
What They Mean. What to Do. When to Call.

Your Hoot alarm is designed to get your attention — not to scare you. Most alarms are not emergencies. This page explains exactly what’s happening, what you can safely check yourself, and when to call us.

How the Alarm Works

Your Hoot Has Two Alarm Signals

Every Hoot system uses two simultaneous alerts when something needs attention:

🔴 Visual — Red Status Light

A red light on the Hoot controller illuminates when the alarm triggers. This light stays on until the underlying issue is resolved — even after the sound has been silenced.

🔔 Audio — Audible Buzzer

A constant, high-pitched tone sounds from the controller. You can silence the audio by pressing the silence button on the Hoot controller door.

Important: Pressing the silence button stops the sound only — it does not fix or clear the alarm. The red light will remain on until the issue is diagnosed and resolved. Do not ignore a silenced alarm.

Immediate Steps

Don’t Panic — Start Here

If your Hoot alarm activates, take a breath. In most cases it is not an emergency, and you have time to assess the situation calmly before calling us.

  • Silence the audio alarm. Press the silence button on the Hoot controller door to stop the buzzer. The red light will stay on — that’s normal and expected.
  • Reduce water use. Until the issue is resolved, minimize water use in your home. Skip the dishwasher, laundry, and long showers. This reduces load on the system while it’s in an alert state.
  • Check the circuit breaker. Go to your home’s electrical panel and look for the breaker connected to your Hoot system. If it has tripped, reset it and wait a few minutes to see if the alarm clears. A tripped breaker is one of the most common — and simplest — causes.
  • Do a quick visual check. Look at the controller, blower, and any visible equipment. Note anything obviously out of place — a disconnected wire, standing water near equipment, or visible damage.
  • Call Superior On-Site Solutions. If the alarm doesn’t clear after checking the breaker, or if you see anything unusual, call us at 916-436-8457. We’ll walk you through next steps or schedule a service visit.

Common Causes

What Usually Triggers a Hoot Alarm

Power Interruption or Tripped Breaker

The most common cause. Your Hoot system requires continuous power. If the breaker trips or power is interrupted long enough to affect system levels, the alarm will activate.

High Water Level in the Pump Chamber

If water rises above the normal operating level — due to heavy household use, a pump issue, or a probe malfunction — the high-water liquid sensor probe triggers the alarm.

Blower Issue

The air blower aerates the treatment chamber and runs continuously. If it stops or underperforms, the alarm may activate. Blower issues are typically a component replacement, not a system failure.

Liquid Sensor Probe Malfunction

Hoot systems use liquid sensor probes to monitor water levels and tell the system when to pump. A fouled or failed probe can trigger a false alarm — or prevent the pump from running when it should.

Extended Power Outage

Short outages are handled by the system’s storage capacity. If power is out for an extended period and water use continues, levels can rise enough to trigger the alarm. Minimize water use during any outage.

What if the alarm clears on its own? Still call us. An alarm that self-resolves may indicate an intermittent issue that will return — or something that already caused a problem and needs to be assessed.

Important

A Few Things to Avoid

  • Don’t ignore the alarm. Even if the sound is silenced, the red light means something needs attention. Unresolved issues can lead to treatment failure or system damage.
  • Don’t open or adjust electrical components yourself. The Hoot controller and alarm system are connected to live electrical components. DIY repairs can be dangerous and may void your warranty.
  • Don’t keep running heavy water use. Laundry, dishwashers, and long showers all add load to a system that’s already in an alert state.
  • Don’t assume it’s fine because the buzzer stopped. Silencing the alarm does not fix anything. The red light is still telling you something needs attention.

Emergency Signs

Call Us Right Away If You See Any of These

  • Water or sewage surfacing in your yard near the tank or dispersal area
  • Sewage backing up into your home
  • A strong sewage odor indoors or directly over the tank area
  • The alarm activates repeatedly after resetting
  • The red light won’t clear after checking the breaker and reducing water use

If you see any of the above, call us immediately at 916-436-8457. We serve Hoot system owners throughout California and can often diagnose issues quickly over the phone.

Our Services

How We Help When Your Alarm Goes Off

Remote Phone Diagnosis

In many cases we can walk you through the issue and identify the likely cause over the phone — no service visit needed.

On-Site Alarm Diagnosis

Our technicians know the Hoot system inside and out. We’ll identify the cause, document the finding, and fix the issue in one visit whenever possible.

Authorized Component Replacement

Pumps, liquid sensor probes, blowers, and control panel components are available through us as California’s authorized Hoot manufacturer and distributor. We use authorized Hoot parts — not substitutes.

Prevention

Regular O&M Service Keeps Alarms Rare

The best way to avoid alarm situations is scheduled Operation & Maintenance service. California counties require O&M visits for advanced treatment systems — typically once or twice per year depending on your county’s LAMP requirements.

During each O&M visit, we:

  • Inspect and test all alarm components
  • Check liquid sensor probe operation and condition
  • Verify blower performance and airflow
  • Inspect pumps and effluent levels
  • Document findings for your county compliance record

Owners on our O&M program catch issues before they trigger an alarm — and before they become expensive repairs. Learn About O&M Service →

FAQ

Hoot Alarm Questions — Answered

Can I silence the alarm and wait until tomorrow to call?

For most alarms, waiting a day is not an emergency — but reduce water use and call us first thing in the morning. If you see sewage surfacing or smell sewage indoors, call immediately.

Will my alarm go off during a power outage?

The Hoot system has built-in storage capacity that handles short outages. If the outage is long enough to raise water levels, the alarm may activate when power returns. Minimize water use during any outage to help prevent this.

Can I adjust or repair the alarm myself?

No. Hoot alarms are connected to electrical and mechanical components that require specialized knowledge. DIY adjustments can result in false alerts, missed warnings, or system damage — and may void your warranty.

How do I know if it’s a false alarm vs. a real issue?

Check the breaker first. If resetting it clears the alarm and it doesn’t return, it may have been a brief power event. If the alarm returns or the red light won’t clear, something needs attention — call us.

Does a Hoot alarm mean my system is failing?

Not necessarily. Most alarms indicate a component issue — a tripped breaker, a fouled probe, a blower that needs service — not a full system failure. Catching these issues early is exactly what the alarm system is designed to do.
