Understanding Your System

The Most Common Questions Hoot Owners Ask

Whether you’ve just had a Hoot system installed or you’ve owned one for years, these are the questions we hear most often. If you don’t find your answer here, call us at 916-436-8457 — we’re happy to help.

What is a Hoot septic system?
A Hoot system is an advanced aerobic wastewater treatment system. Unlike conventional septic tanks that simply separate solids from liquids, the Hoot actively introduces oxygen into the treatment process — activating beneficial bacteria that break down waste much more thoroughly. The result is cleaner, clearer effluent that can be safely dispersed through a smaller drain field, often in areas where conventional systems can’t be installed.
How is it different from a conventional septic system?
Conventional septic systems rely on anaerobic (oxygen-free) digestion — a slow process that produces partially treated effluent requiring large drain fields with good soil conditions. The Hoot uses aerobic (oxygen-rich) digestion, which is far more efficient. It achieves 98% CBOD and 99% TSS reduction inside the tank — leaving your drain field responsible only for dispersal of already-clean water.
Does my Hoot system require electricity?
Yes. The air blower, control panel, and pumps all require electricity. Your system needs a dedicated power supply at all times. Short power outages are handled by the system’s storage capacity, but prolonged outages should be addressed — the alarm will notify you if there’s an issue.
How often does it need maintenance?
California county regulations typically require O&M service visits once or twice per year, depending on your county’s LAMP requirements. Superior On-Site Solutions manages this schedule for our clients and will contact you when service is due.
Can the treated water be reused for irrigation?
In many cases, yes. If your system uses Geoflow subsurface drip tubing, treated effluent is distributed through underground drip lines that benefit your landscaping’s root zone. Some counties also permit additional reuse applications — your O&M provider can advise on what’s approved in your area.
What happens during a power outage?
The Hoot system has storage capacity that handles typical short outages. The alarm system will alert you if the outage is affecting system performance. For outages lasting more than a day, contact Superior On-Site Solutions. Minimize water use during extended outages.
Is the system approved everywhere in California?
Hoot systems are approved in counties throughout California that have adopted the state OWTS Policy and LAMP framework — which covers the large majority of California counties. Specific approval requirements vary by county. We work in 24+ California counties and are familiar with each county’s requirements.
Why do I need a professional service provider?
California county regulations require that advanced aerobic treatment systems be maintained by a qualified service provider. Beyond regulatory compliance, professional service protects your system’s performance, extends its lifespan, maintains your warranty, and ensures any issues are caught early — before they become expensive problems.
