The Proof Is in the Water
Real effluent testing from Hoot systems across our service area — consistently meeting and beating California’s advanced treatment standards, year after year.
Anyone can claim their septic system “works.” We can show it. For more than 15 years, the Hoot systems we’ve installed and serviced across Northern California have been independently sampled and tested for water quality — and the results speak for themselves.
Every Hoot system is built to meet NSF/ANSI Standard 40, the nationally recognized benchmark for advanced onsite wastewater treatment. The Hoot H-600 is NSF-certified: in standardized testing, incoming wastewater averaging well over 100 mg/L of suspended solids was treated down to levels comfortably within the standard. Our own field sampling, year after year, shows the same story on real California properties.
What “Clean” Actually Means
California’s advanced treatment systems are measured against clear, published limits. Here’s the bar every Hoot system is designed to clear:
| What’s Measured | NSF 40 Limit | In Plain English |
|---|---|---|
| CBOD₅ | ≤ 25 mg/L | Organic waste that consumes oxygen — the lower, the cleaner |
| TSS | ≤ 30 mg/L | Suspended solids — how clear vs. cloudy the water is |
| Total Nitrogen | ≥ 50% reduction* | Nutrients that can harm groundwater and waterways |
| pH | 6.0 – 9.0 | Acid/alkaline balance — protects soil and groundwater |
*Nitrogen reduction is governed by NSF/ANSI Standard 245. “ND” in lab results means non-detect — the contaminant was below the level instruments can measure.
Actual Field Samples From Hoot Systems
The results below are real effluent test results from Hoot systems in our service area, anonymized to protect our customers’ privacy. Compare them to the NSF 40 limits above — many readings come back as non-detect.
| Sample | CBOD₅ (limit ≤25) |
TSS (limit ≤30) |
Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| System A | ND | 10 | ✔ Well within standard |
| System B | ND | ND | ✔ Non-detect |
| System C | 5.3 | ND | ✔ Well within standard |
| System D | ND | ND | ✔ Non-detect |
| System E | 22 | ND | ✔ Within standard |
| System F | ND | ND | ✔ Non-detect |
Results shown are representative samples from routine O&M testing. Individual results vary by system, site, and sampling conditions. Full testing records are maintained as part of every system’s lifetime Operation & Maintenance program.
Why Hoot Outperforms
High-efficiency aerobic treatment breaks down organic waste far beyond what conventional septic achieves.
Clean, clear effluent — protecting your soil, your groundwater, and your property.
This is why engineers specify Hoot for California’s toughest sites. When your property is near a creek, over a high water table, or in a nitrogen-sensitive watershed, treatment quality isn’t a luxury — it’s what makes the project possible.
Want Treatment You Can Prove?
Whether you’re a homeowner, engineer, or contractor, we’ll show you exactly what a Hoot system can do for your site.
